1. Your Thoughts Are Just Your Thoughts
First things first, let’s talk about these brain of ours…
You know, those thoughts that tell you you’re not enough or that you can’t do this? Well, here’s a little secret: they’re just thoughts. They’re not facts.
Our brains have this funny job of trying to make our thoughts real. It’s like a protective mechanism. But here’s the thing – not every thought your brain offers you is true. Your job is to cultivate thoughts that are constructive and helpful. Thoughts that remind you that you are enough, that you deserve your place as a Scholarly Mama.
Remember, those who have achieved what you want to achieve are no better than you. You belong on this journey of Scholarly Motherhood just as much as anyone else. So next time those doubtful thoughts creep in, remind yourself: “These are just thoughts, not facts.”
2. You’re Stronger Than You Think Because You Know That Not Everything Matters (Right Now)
I know it feels like everything is important when you’re juggling so many responsibilities. But here’s a liberating truth: not everything matters, and certainly not everything matters right now.
This was one of the biggest lessons I learned on my Scholarly Mama journey. Just because something matters to someone else doesn’t mean it has to matter to you. Maybe others are obsessed with prestige, pace or rising up the academic ladder. But you get to decide what your priorities are.
You don’t need to go from zero to hero overnight. You’re more than capable of achieving your goals without sacrificing the things that truly matter to you. So take a deep breath and remember – you have the power to choose what’s important in your life right now.
3. You Still Have Time
Ever feel like there’s just not enough time to do it all? I get it. But here’s the thing – you have more time than you think. It’s all about cultivating an abundance mindset when it comes to time.
There is enough time to get everything done. It just requires a bit of strategy and setting those priorities we talked about earlier. Remember, there’s enough time for what matters. So instead of feeling rushed and overwhelmed, try to shift your perspective. You have time. You’ve got this.
4. You’ve Come This Far Because You’re Stronger Than You Think!
Take a moment to reflect on how far you’ve come. You didn’t get to where you are by luck or chance. Think about all the challenges you’ve overcome, all the late nights you’ve powered through, all the moments you wanted to give up but didn’t.
What has helped you get this far? Maybe it’s your unwavering belief in yourself. Perhaps it’s your ability to build meaningful relationships that encourage you and enhance your journey. It could be your faith, your ability to reflect deeply, or some unique talents and skills you possess.
Whatever it is, recognise that these are signs of your inner strength. You’ve already accomplished so much. And that’s proof that you’re stronger than you think!
5. You’re Becoming a Purposeful Scholarly Mama®
Being a Scholarly Mama isn’t just about juggling roles – it’s an identity to be proud of. You’re not just drifting through this journey. You’re goal-driven, intentional, and ambitious. But you’re also playful, creative, resilient, and nurturing.
You’re a scholar, yes, but you’re also a Mama with a whole life outside of academia. That’s what makes you unique. That’s what makes you strong. So stand proudly in that identity. Wear your Scholarly Mama hat with pride, because not everyone can do what you’re doing.
6. You’re Not Alone
Remember this: you are not alone on this journey. By seeking support and joining communities like ours, you’ve shown bravery and wisdom. You’re part of something bigger – a movement of purpose-driven Mamas who are changing the narrative of what it means to be a mother on a PhD journey.
There’s strength in numbers, and you’ve tapped into that strength by connecting with others who understand your journey. So when you’re feeling overwhelmed, remember that you have a community behind you, cheering you on.
7. You’re Stronger Than You Think Because You Know Your Purpose
You’re not here by chance. This journey you’re on – it has a purpose. And achieving your goals isn’t about working harder and burning yourself out. It’s about becoming the person who achieves those goals.
Here’s a little tip: when you’re facing a challenge, try to embody the person who has already achieved what you’re aiming for. Show up as if you’ve already won. This isn’t about arrogance – it’s about believing so deeply in yourself that you hold that belief in advance. That’s the power of purpose, and it’s within your grasp.
8. You Have the Strength to Make Tough Decisions
There might be days when you’re tempted to quit your PhD. And other days when you feel like you can conquer the world. This back-and-forth is normal, but here’s where your true strength lies: in your ability to navigate these moments of uncertainty.
Sometimes, the strongest thing you can do is not make a rushed decision. Instead, give yourself time and space to gather information, explore your options, and seek guidance if needed. It takes real strength to step back when you’re feeling overwhelmed and resist the temptation to make a decision you might regret.
Remember, it’s okay to say, “Now is not the time for this decision.” That’s not weakness – that’s wisdom and strength.
9. Your Trials Are Temporary
When you’re in the thick of it – sleep-deprived, struggling to focus on your thesis, feeling like you’re falling behind – remember this: these trials are temporary. They too, will pass.
Instead of asking yourself if you’re good enough, ask what this journey is teaching you. What lessons can you learn from these challenges? Having a growth mindset and recognising that difficulties are opportunities for learning – that’s a sign of true strength.
10. The Only Way to Fail Is to Stop Growing
Here’s the final and perhaps most important reason why you’re stronger than you think: the only way you truly fail is when you stop growing. As long as you’re open to learning from your experiences and challenges, you’re not failing – you’re evolving.
This journey isn’t about competing with others. It’s about owning your path, using it for your personal growth, and recognising the lessons along the way. So ask yourself: What is this journey teaching you? What are these trials showing you about yourself?
Don’t let anyone make you think you’re a failure. Don’t let anyone make you believe you can’t navigate this journey well just because you’re a Mama.
Is it easy? No. But you have what it takes!
Wrapping It Up On Why You’re Stronger Than You Think
So there you have it, Mama – 10 powerful reasons why you’re stronger than you think! This journey of being a Scholarly Mama isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s challenging, it’s demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.

So the next time you’re doubting yourself, come back to these reasons. Remind yourself of your strength, your purpose, and your incredible resilience. You are stronger than you think, and you’ve got this.
