The 7 C’s Every Scholarly Mama Needs to Unlock Success

April 18, 2024 · Personal Growth & Wellness

Pursuing a PhD as a mother is no easy feat. It’s a journey filled with challenges, juggling multiple roles, and constantly striving for harmony. However, with the right mindset and tools, Scholarly Mamas can unlock the path to success and thrive in their academic and personal lives. In this blog post, we’ll explore the seven essential pillars, or the “7 C’s,” that every Scholarly Mama needs to embrace to unlock their full potential and achieve their goals.

By the way, if you want to listen to the related podcast episode on this topic, please feel free to tune in using the player below:

1. Curiosity: The Spark that Ignites Your Scholarly Mama Journey

Curiosity is the driving force behind every scholarly pursuit. It’s that insatiable thirst for knowledge, that desire to question the status quo, and the yearning to uncover new perspectives. Therefore, as a Scholarly Mama, embracing your curious nature is the first step towards unlocking success.

Encouraging a curious mindset from an early age can lay the foundation for a lifetime of exploration and learning. Therefore, by fostering an environment where questions are welcomed and diverse ideas are celebrated, Scholarly Mamas can ignite their children’s curiosity and inspire them to embrace their own inquisitive nature.

Moreover, allowing your curiosity to guide you through your PhD journey can lead to thought-provoking questions, innovative research ideas, and a constant pursuit of knowledge. It opens the gateway to a world of possibilities, pushing you to explore new avenues and challenge conventional wisdom.

2. Creativity: The Fuel that Powers Innovation and Breakthroughs

Creativity is the lifeblood of innovation and breakthrough discoveries. In the realm of academia, thinking outside the box and integrating diverse ideas can enrich your research life and propel your scholarly journey forward. As a Scholarly Mama, embracing your creativity can not only enhance your academic pursuits but also enrich your motherhood experience and unlock success.

Encouraging creativity in your children can foster their imagination, problem-solving skills, and self-expression. By nurturing their creative spirits, you empower them to think beyond boundaries and approach challenges with fresh perspectives.

Furthermore, tapping into your own creative side can lead to personal growth, self-discovery, and a sense of fulfilment beyond the academic realm. Engaging in creative pursuits, whether it’s writing, art, or any form of expression, can provide a much-needed respite from the rigours of academic life. It can also offer a balanced approach to your overall well-being.

3. Courage: Unlock Success With The Backbone of Perseverance

Pursuing a PhD while navigating the demands of motherhood requires immense courage and resilience. Therefore, embracing the courage to tackle obstacles head-on and charting your own path to success is crucial for Scholarly Mamas.

Courage empowers you to step out of your comfort zone, take calculated risks, and pursue opportunities that may initially seem daunting. It undoubtedly gives you the strength to persevere in the face of setbacks, overcome self-doubt, and maintain unwavering commitment to your goals. This is how you unlock success as a Scholarly Mama.

As a Scholarly Mama, cultivating courage can inspire your children to embrace their own aspirations fearlessly. By witnessing your determination and resilience, you become a powerful role model, instilling in them the belief that no dream is too ambitious if approached with courage and perseverance.

4. Confidence: The Cornerstone of Success

Confidence is the foundation upon which success is built as believing in your capabilities as a mother and a scholar, owning your expertise, and trusting your instincts are essential components of a confident Scholarly Mama.

Cultivating self-confidence allows you to present your research with conviction, express your ideas with clarity, and seamlessly blend the various roles and responsibilities you juggle. It empowers you to embrace your unique perspective and recognise the value you bring to academia and society.

Moreover, exuding confidence can inspire your children to develop a positive self-image and a strong belief in their own abilities. By witnessing your self-assurance, they learn to embrace their strengths, celebrate their achievements, and approach challenges with a resilient mindset.

5. Clarity: The Guiding Light on Your Scholarly Mama Purpose Path

Clarity is the foundation upon which purposeful action is built. As a Scholarly Mama, possessing clarity about your goals, priorities, and the distribution of your energy is paramount to achieving success.

Gaining clarity allows you to perceive your purpose path with precision, ensuring that your time and efforts are invested in the areas that truly align with your scholarly and personal aspirations. It empowers you to make informed decisions, set boundaries, and navigate the complexities of juggling multiple roles with intentionality.

Also, by cultivating clarity, you can serve as a role model for your children. This can teach them the importance of setting clear goals, prioritising their commitments, and aligning their actions with their values and aspirations.

6. Community: The Support System Every Scholarly Mama Needs

Building a strong community is essential for every PhD mother. Connecting with other Scholarly Mamas, seeking mentorship, and establishing a supportive network can provide the guidance, shared experiences, and empowerment needed to thrive on this journey.

Surrounding yourself with individuals who understand the unique challenges and joys of being a Scholarly Mama can offer a sense of belonging and validation. Of course, it creates a safe space where you can share your struggles, celebrate your triumphs, and receive encouragement from those who have walked a similar path.

Furthermore, engaging in a community of like-minded individuals can foster collaboration, idea-sharing, and valuable mentorship opportunities. By learning from the experiences of others, you can gain insights, strategies, and inspiration to navigate your own Scholarly Mama journey with greater ease and confidence.

7. Contribution: The Essence of Your Scholarly Mama Purpose

Your research, experiences, and unique perspective as a Scholarly Mama hold immense value. Recognising the power of your contributions and embracing the opportunity to share your knowledge, mentor others, and impact academia and society is the essence of your Scholarly Mama purpose.

Contributing to the academic discourse through your research and publications can shape the intellectual landscape and advance our collective understanding. By sharing your insights and discoveries, you have the potential to inspire future generations of scholars and ignite intellectual curiosity.

Additionally, by contributing your time and expertise as a mentor or role model, you can empower and guide aspiring Scholarly Mamas, fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for their growth and development.

Embracing the notion of contribution allows you to perceive your Scholarly Mama journey as an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy, positively impacting the lives of others and making a meaningful difference in the world.

Conclusion: The 7 Pillars of Scholarly Mama Success

Navigating the path of PhD motherhood is a transformative journey filled with challenges and triumphs. So, by embracing the 7 C’s – curiosity, creativity, courage, confidence, clarity, community, and contribution – Scholarly Mamas can unlock the keys to success and thrive in their academic and personal lives.

Remember, your journey is not merely about juggling roles but rather a profound exploration of self-discovery, personal growth, and the pursuit of becoming purposefully whole. So, embrace these seven pillars, stay curious, cherish your community, and never underestimate the power of your contributions.

Altogether, by embodying these principles, you can unlock a world of possibilities, inspire those around you, and leave a lasting legacy that transcends academic achievements. So, embrace your Scholarly Mama journey with unwavering determination, and watch as your dreams take flight, paving the way for a life of purpose, fulfilment, and profound impact.

Remember Mama, these are our journeys of becoming!

Until next time, I’m sending you lots of love and gratitude,

Mama, don’t be distracted by doubters👇🏽

…because your journeys of becoming and purposeful outcomes will always speak for themselves, even if you’re also a Mama!

You’ll have a quiet, peaceful confidence about you that speaks volumes 🗣️

You see, for me, delayed was never denied because I knew there was no ‘standard way’ of navigating a PhD journey. Being a Mama before I began this journey and growing our family further during my PhD enhanced my journey in ways I can never explain… it was definitely not a hindrance or barrier to my success.

Was it harder? You bet!

Did it take me longer? Yes, it did.

Would I do it again? I’m not sure 🤔

But was it impossible? Clearly not!

What I realised, is that I had to hold the belief in who I was and get clear on my why, because I was enough and so are you! You are more than your PhD.

I nearly quit my PhD more than once... Not becaus I nearly quit my PhD more than once...

Not because I couldn’t do the work—but because I was exhausted, isolated, and felt like no one understood how hard it was to keep holding it all together.

These five truths could’ve saved me so much guilt, self-doubt and second-guessing.

Swipe through if you’re:
– Juggling all the things and writing your PhD thesis during nap times
– Wondering if you’re too behind to finish
– Feeling like both a horrible Mama and PhD student who is always in survival mode

If this sounds like you, you are not broken. You’re just juggling a whole lot alone—without the village/support you deserve.

💬If this hits home, DM me 'WELL' and let’s get you connected, refocused, grounded again, and back on track—without burning out.

"I can't tell you how many failed grant applicatio "I can't tell you how many failed grant applications I have had in the past year. They've been quite a few!..." she said.

This was a conversation I had last week with a very senior colleague...

It was a powerful moment of exchange....

She went on to share how many unsuccessful grant applications she'd had in the past year...

I also shared similar experiences of 'failure'...

The wins and successes we've had have been amazing but the failures have definitely stung HARD!

Two researchers, very different on paper...
And yet...
The level of shared understanding between us was profound.
The shared experience of 'failure' was normalised.
The effort was valued and appreciated.
The mutual support was beautiful.

We both felt seen, heard and understood.

But we both left that call inspired and motivated to not give up!

And so, here's the thing.... there is so much power in these conversations.

Sometimes you may never know the impact that a mundane interaction / mutual exchange can have, but I believe these conversations are so needed - not to champion mediocrity or diminish standards of academic excellence, but to normalise unsuccessful attempts, to celebrate effort and intention even when they don't lead to the desired outcome, to help us realise the potential for personal or professional growth and to motivate us to keep going.
