1. Be purposeful… about your time, your commitments, and your relationships (personal and professional). Being intentional about your time and tasks is super important if you’re going to finish well and actually enjoy the moments you’ll never get back - because you matter, your family matters, your journey matters! Start with making the things that truly matter a priority in your life now, not when you achieve this or that! Invest in your professional relationahsips too, because every opportunity that comes your way or doors that open for you will come down to the relationships you’ve established. Build genuine connections, not to ‘get’ anything but to learn, grow and lift others up as you climb. This is the power of purposeful work.

2. Focus on ‘becoming’… because what got you here won’t get you there. On this journey, you’re not just grinding and pumping research outputs, you’re ‘becoming’ a new version of yourself. You’re becoming a Scholarly Mama® on this journey. This isn’t a race to the finish. This is an opportunity to grow, to learn and to become the Scholarly Mama® you desire to be. It’s YOUR journey, make it your own collection of lessons and learning experiences. It’s outcomes over outputs…

3.Stop doing this alone… a PhD can often feel like an isolating pilgrimage of sorts, especially as a Mama. The Queen of the Unhurried Life 😂

But all jokes aside, a slow, consistent, and methodical approach has gotten me this far in my podcasting journey without burnout but it’s also what got me through my rollercoaster of a PhD journey with multiple challenges, breaks and maternity leaves in between. It’s what allowed me to finish well in the end.

I’ll say this again and again “until de cows come home” (in my Bajan dialect and as we say in Barbados 🇧🇧): consistency matters more than speed!

I began my podcast journey in the final stages of my PhD - I hadn’t even submitted my thesis yet!

I can’t believe that it’s been 100 weekly episodes since then! As an introvert/ambivert, one of the things I love about podcasting as a medium is just how intimate it is… it’s just you and me every week Mama!

So if you’ve been on this journey with me (bonus points if you’ve been listening from episode 1), I’m so grateful for you!

…the more I see that cut/broken stems don’t determine the beauty of the flowers.

Pruning is necessary for growth…

Self-love is a valid success strategy for @scholarlymamas.

Sometimes that means letting go of the need and expectation to always produce. It’s like expecting flowers to always be in bloom. Give yourself grace and permission to prune and grow… every flower has its season of blooming. Yours is coming…

‘Becoming’ will carry you to (and beyond) your PhD goals. Permanent production mode is a fast track to burnout.

This might sound a bit strange, but when I was deciding whether to pursue my PhD or not as a Mama (by then, we already had our first son), I was deeply fearful…

I was afraid that the rigours of an academic journey in the middle of my career would change me—and not in a positive way. I was worried that it would affect how I showed up as a wife and mother, that it would alter my sense of self. I feared that I would become so immersed in my PhD research that I’d lose myself along the way.

Honestly, this concern wasn’t unfounded. I had seen it happen to others, even those without the extra responsibilities I had! The guilt of putting my family through such a long and challenging process—one that came with financial, emotional, and opportunity costs—weighed heavily on me.

As a mother, this wasn’t an easy choice to make.

But here’s what I’ve come to understand…

Pursuing a PhD doesn’t fundamentally change who you are—it magnifies the person you already are.

Looking back, I’m proud of how I navigated this journey. Keeping my family close helped me set and maintain my boundaries. Staying grounded in my values allowed me to align my goals accordingly. Knowing both who I was and who I aspired to be helped me recognise opportunities for growth—and also when to step away from things that didn’t serve me.

I had our two other sons during my PhD and still finished well.

Did I get everything right all the time? Definitely not! But the lessons I learned along the way helped me lay the foundations for purposeful success.

You don’t have to abandon yourself, your family or your values to finish your PhD well with kids in tow. You don’t have to give up what matters most to chase your biggest aspirations. Your path may not look like everyone else’s, but you can still make it work. You can still finish well!

Hey Mama, I’m Michelle (@mrsmummyphd).

I was the first in my family to even attend university, let alone earn a degree. At 40, I completed my 5th degree, my PhD, as a Mama of three!

Almost a year later, I finally walked across the stage at my PhD graduation, with my husband and our sons cheering me on after >8 years of dedication to my part-time doctoral journey.

Words can’t fully capture what that moment meant to me…

My PhD journey transformed me. I went from an exhausted Mama drowning in deadlines and struggling to juggle it all, to the purposeful Scholarly Mama® you see today.

All while managing a career in healthcare and nurturing a family life I deeply cherish, and most importantly while staying true to myself.

I’ve been happily married to my high school sweetheart for over 18 years, and together, we’re raising our three amazing boys—two of whom we had while I was on my PhD journey.

Beyond that, I’m the Founder of Scholarly Mamas (@scholarlymamas), a purposeful community dedicated to supporting Mamas on doctoral journeys.

My mission is rooted in helping Mamas become Drs—without sacrificing what matters!

And I think that’s so profound…

It’s easy to get so caught up in PhD-life that you miss these moments…

When we try to navigate PhD life as Mamas with overflowing masculine energy it leaves us feeling like we’re not good enough, like we need to constantly do more to prove ourselves, that we need to put our vulnerabilities aside and focus on solely doing the visible work, leading us to chase success in a way that does not align with our priorities and values…

Instead, purposeful success gives you permission to lean into your feminine energy. It acknowledges vulnerabilities and promotes self-compassion. It leads with intuition, introspection, empathy and love.

And guess what? It is more than possible to achieve our goals the feminine way! I’m proof of that… 🙌🏽

Wouldn’t trade my PhD-babies for the world because they taught me the true meaning of purposeful success! They’ve taught me that ambition and purpose can intersect without undesirable compromises….
