Manage Your Energy Over Your Time: Why This is Crucial for Scholarly Mamas

April 11, 2024 · Personal Growth & Wellness

As a Scholarly Mama, you’ve likely been told to master the art of time management to juggle your academic pursuits, motherhood, and other responsibilities. While effective time management strategies are undoubtedly important, there’s one thing that’s even more critical – learning to manage your energy.

In this post, we’ll explore why energy management should be the top priority for Scholarly Mamas. We’ll also show you how it can help you achieve your life and academic goals without sacrificing what truly matters.

By the way, if you want to listen to the related podcast episode, please feel free to listen using the player below:

The Limitations of Time Management Obsession and Why You Should Manage Your Energy Instead

When we become obsessed with perfecting time management, we inadvertently devalue time itself. In our quest to allocate every minute to a specific task or responsibility, we often overlook the fact that our energy levels are finite.

Unlike time, which is a constant 24 hours in a day, our energy reserves are limited. Pushing ourselves endlessly without considering our energy levels is akin to running on an empty battery. It’s unsustainable and can lead to burnout.

The Importance of Quality Over Quantity To Manage Your Energy

One of the key reasons why energy management is paramount for Scholarly Mamas is that quality matters more than quantity when it comes to energy expenditure. It’s not about how many hours you dedicate to your PhD work or other tasks. It’s about investing your time when you’re well-rested, engaged, and operating at your peak energy levels.

When you manage your energy effectively, you can accomplish more in a shorter time frame. This is because you’re working at your optimal capacity. This not only boosts your productivity but also helps prevent burnout, a common issue among overworked and overstressed Scholarly Mamas.

Avoiding Burnout Through Energy Management

Over-exerting ourselves in an attempt to manage time can lead to burnout. This can have detrimental effects on both our academic and family lives. When we manage our energy, we mitigate this risk by allowing ourselves to work and get things done within a shorter time frame when we’re most productive and energised.

By recognising when we need to take a break or engage in self-care activities, we can recharge our batteries and return to our tasks refreshed and ready to give our best efforts. This not only prevents burnout but also ensures that we can consistently show up as our best selves in all aspects of our lives.

The Importance of Self-Care and Recharging

Energy management is intrinsically linked to self-care and recharging. By recognising when we need to pause and tend to our own needs, we’re able to invest in ourselves and, by extension, pour into the cups of others around us.

Managing our energy allows us to be more present. We can then serve at our highest level in whatever capacity we’re called to serve. It allows us to give our time and attention to the people we love without feeling depleted or overwhelmed.

Aligning with Your Natural Rhythms

Another significant benefit of energy management is that it allows you to align your schedule with your natural energy flows or rhythms. Some individuals are more productive in the morning (like myself), while others thrive as night owls.

By adjusting your schedule to honour your peak energy times, you can work at your highest level, produce quality work, and remain fully engaged and present in the task at hand. This applies not only to your academic pursuits but also to spending quality time with your family and loved ones.

Establishing Boundaries and Protecting Your Energy

When you understand your energy cycle and flow, you’re better equipped to establish boundaries that protect your energy reserves. This means learning to say no to commitments or activities that drain your energy unnecessarily, prioritising self-preservation without guilt, and focusing your efforts on what truly matters most.

By managing your energy effectively, you can let go of worries about what others might think. This way you can concentrate your efforts on your purpose and priorities. This level of clarity and boundary-setting is essential for Scholarly Mamas seeking to blend their academic aspirations and family life harmoniously.

A Friendly Reminder To Manage Your Energy

As we conclude, let’s reflect on this quote: “You don’t have to do it all. You just have to do what matters most.” This friendly reminder encapsulates the essence of energy management. It allows you to focus on what truly matters in your academic and family life.

Blending your roles as a remarkable scholar and a loving mama is achievable when you manage your energy wisely. By prioritising quality over quantity, avoiding burnout, practicing self-care, aligning with your natural rhythms, and establishing boundaries, you can navigate your Scholarly Mama journey with purpose and grace.

Embrace Energy Management for Academic and Life Success

While time management strategies are valuable tools, energy management should be the bedrock of your approach as a Scholarly Mama. By understanding and honouring your body’s natural energy cycles, you can work smarter, not harder. This way you can achieve your goals without sacrificing your well-being or neglecting your loved ones.

Implement these energy management principles into your daily routine, and watch as you experience increased productivity, a better work-life blend, and a newfound sense of fulfillment in your roles as a scholar and a Mama.

Remember, you are a remarkable scholar and a loving Mama. By managing your energy wisely, you can blend these two dimensions of yourself seamlessly. Embrace energy management today and embark on a journey of purposeful living, where every moment counts, and every ounce of energy is invested in what truly matters most.

Remember Mama, these are our journeys of becoming!

Sending you lots of love and gratitude,

Mama, don’t be distracted by doubters👇🏽

…because your journeys of becoming and purposeful outcomes will always speak for themselves, even if you’re also a Mama!

You’ll have a quiet, peaceful confidence about you that speaks volumes 🗣️

You see, for me, delayed was never denied because I knew there was no ‘standard way’ of navigating a PhD journey. Being a Mama before I began this journey and growing our family further during my PhD enhanced my journey in ways I can never explain… it was definitely not a hindrance or barrier to my success.

Was it harder? You bet!

Did it take me longer? Yes, it did.

Would I do it again? I’m not sure 🤔

But was it impossible? Clearly not!

What I realised, is that I had to hold the belief in who I was and get clear on my why, because I was enough and so are you! You are more than your PhD.

I nearly quit my PhD more than once... Not becaus I nearly quit my PhD more than once...

Not because I couldn’t do the work—but because I was exhausted, isolated, and felt like no one understood how hard it was to keep holding it all together.

These five truths could’ve saved me so much guilt, self-doubt and second-guessing.

Swipe through if you’re:
– Juggling all the things and writing your PhD thesis during nap times
– Wondering if you’re too behind to finish
– Feeling like both a horrible Mama and PhD student who is always in survival mode

If this sounds like you, you are not broken. You’re just juggling a whole lot alone—without the village/support you deserve.

💬If this hits home, DM me 'WELL' and let’s get you connected, refocused, grounded again, and back on track—without burning out.

"I can't tell you how many failed grant applicatio "I can't tell you how many failed grant applications I have had in the past year. They've been quite a few!..." she said.

This was a conversation I had last week with a very senior colleague...

It was a powerful moment of exchange....

She went on to share how many unsuccessful grant applications she'd had in the past year...

I also shared similar experiences of 'failure'...

The wins and successes we've had have been amazing but the failures have definitely stung HARD!

Two researchers, very different on paper...
And yet...
The level of shared understanding between us was profound.
The shared experience of 'failure' was normalised.
The effort was valued and appreciated.
The mutual support was beautiful.

We both felt seen, heard and understood.

But we both left that call inspired and motivated to not give up!

And so, here's the thing.... there is so much power in these conversations.

Sometimes you may never know the impact that a mundane interaction / mutual exchange can have, but I believe these conversations are so needed - not to champion mediocrity or diminish standards of academic excellence, but to normalise unsuccessful attempts, to celebrate effort and intention even when they don't lead to the desired outcome, to help us realise the potential for personal or professional growth and to motivate us to keep going.
